Nellie Bly

At the beginning of the semester I learned about an amazing women who was one of the pioneered women in journalism. Her name was Nellie Bly. She was one of the young and brave girls who changed women history. She began her career as journalist at 18 years old. One of her major achievements was when she fooled a group of psychiatrists and pretended to be insane. She stayed for 10 days at the insane asylum in Blackwell’s Island and she went on a trip around the world in 72 days to bit the record of the novel around the world in 80 days.

In the asylum Bly, revealed all the secrets and violence happened there. She witnessed that some of the patient were not sick at all. Women were left at the asylum just because their husbands wanted to get rid of them. Also, she witnessed some of the workers abusing the patients. After she got out from the asylum, she published what she saw at the asylum on the New York World newspaper. The published news created a scandal that changed the whole health system in United States. Later she wrote the book Ten Days in a Mad House.

Another amazing achievement was when she went on a trip around the world in 72 days in an attempt to beat the record of the novel “Around the World in 80 Days”. When Bly travelled on her journey, sponsored by the New York World newspaper. The Cosmopolitan newspaper sent a reporter of their own, Elizabeth Bisland to try and beat Nellie Bly. While in the journey she visited England, France, the Suez Canal in Egypt, Yemen, Ceylon, Singapore where she bought a monkey, and finally back to home in San Francisco. Nellie Bly made the trip in 72 days, Bisland finished four days later.

Nellie Bly is such a mazing woman who was very effective in her society. She changed the public opinion about women. I was admired by her biography and her trip around the world. I wish they could make a movie out of her trip. I think it would be amazing.

Reflection on the Devil on the White City

In my English language class, I was assigned to read the novel of The Devil in The White City. Because of the amount of assignments I have I was not excited at all. But when I soon opened the book and started reading I got so interested, because in the first chapter of the book it was speaking about one of the book characters who had a friend died in the Titanic. I love the Titanic and I always used to read about it how did it sink? how many people was in the ship?, who survived?, what type of events happened in the ship?, or is it really true that Kate and Jack met each other in the ship and loved one another or this is something made up by James Cameron. Usually in my nature I love to read about impossible stories happened in real life. The Devil in The White City is considered until now one of the best books I ever read (I did not finish the book yet but it is one of my favorite).

So what is this book is about?

First, it was written by Erik Larson, an American journalist and author of nonfiction books. The Devil in The White City is about real life events happened during the Chicago World’s Fair of 1893. These events were circling tow important characters, one is named Burnham the architect and Holmes the serial killer. Daniel Burnham was the chief architect of the World Colombian Exposition (also known as the Chicago World’s Fair). Burnham goal in this book was to make the World Fair successful more than Paris World’s Fair. He supervised building the World’s Fair in a very unsafe city. Chicago was a large city full of criminals, and murderers. In addition to that the city was so polluted, no one can stand living there. So it was very challenging for Burnham to build the fair. He made it and what’s funny about that is on the first day of the exhibition opining some robbery happened.

As for the second character of the book, who is my favorite, was a man called Dr. Henry Howard Holmes (not his real name). He was a serial killer, his main purpose was to find victims in the fair to kill. Also, he was a very huge sharper and a fraud who used to manipulate people by his Charisma. Imagine that this was a real life character. He built a hotel in persuasive way just to attract his victims. He was dreaming about this vision from a very long time that he prepared for it carefully, and he made it. Very scary right!

did you Know that Leonardo DiCaprio is going to make the movie of this novel.

Now let’s speak about amazing things happened in Chicago World’s Fair

While reading the book I found out that Walt Disney’s father Elias Disney was a carpenter during the World’s Fair construction. Walt Disney used to go with his father to the construction site and provide help. Who knows maybe he got inspired to build Disney Land and Disney World from the World’s Fair. Focus on the name “Disney World.”.

Moreover, did you know that the Ferris wheel that we all know and see it everywhere today was built for the first time in the Chicago World’s fair? It was built by an engineer called George Ferris. Interesting ha!

So many other things appeared for the first time in this World’s Fair. Such as, the dishwasher, the gum, the zipper, and the list goes on.

I have not finished the book yet. I don’t want to precede the event in the book but, it is a very recommendable book. I recommend everyone to read it.

I Love Lucy Class

In my English program at the IELC, I took an integrated skill class about the sit comedy show of I Love Lucy. This sitcom show is very old; it started in the 1950s. It was so hilarious, I really enjoyed watching it. When we were introduced to I Love Lucy, it gave us an overview about history of American Television Sitcom.

I love Lucy was a sitcom television show about Lucy (Lucille Ball) and her husband Ricky (Desi Arnaz). The show was a black and white series that started on October 15, 1951 to May 6, 1957 on CBS. Lucille Ball was an American actress and Desi Arnaz was a Cuban-American actor. In real life, Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz were a married couple. Moreover, other casts from I Love Lucy were Ethel, played by Vivian Vance and Fred, played by William Frawley.

I Love Lucy was the first TV show program shot on 35 mm film in front of a real studio audience. The show received numerous nominations and won five Emmy Awards. It was the number one show in United States between 1951-1957. It was aired and translated to many different languages across the world such as Arabic, and even after its termination the show remained popular to this day. In fact it some film critics called it “the Mona Lisa of television, a work of art whose fame transcends its origins and its medium.”

The Story of the Show was about Ricky Ricardo and his wife Lucy, living in a Brownstone apartment building in New York City. The beautiful and crazy Lucy always wanted to be more than a housewife. She enters herself into all kind of troublesome situations. Ricky and his best friends neighbors Fred and Ethel always find themselves in the middle of Lucy’s bizarre adventures problems. such as her dream of becoming an actress, her determination on writing a novel, and so many other funny strange situations that Americans audience found humorous.

In the integrated skill class we had a survey assignment about which was the best favorite episode of I Love Lucy. We had to ask 30 American students and most of them said the “chocolate factory” Episode. The episode was about switching jobs between Lucy and Ethel’s husband. Ricky and Fred had to work on doing house chores such as cooking and cleaning the house, while Lucy and Ethel go for a real job. The episode was so hilarious, especially the part of Lucy and Ethel covering the chocolate.

Another people’s favorite episode was “Lucy Does a TV Commercial”. Even this episode was so funny; it was about Lucy tricks on Ricky and go for auditioning a TV commercial. In this TV commercial Lucy practice to say this script:

“Hello friends. I’m your Vitameatavegamin girl.

Are you tired, run-down, listless?

Do you poop out at parties? Are you unpopular?

The answer to all your problems is in this little bottle. Vitameatavegamin.

Yes, Vitameatavegamin contains Vitamins, Meat, Vegetables, and Minerals.

Yes, with Vitameatavegamin, you can spoon your way to health.

All you do is take a great big tablespoonful after every meal.

Mmmmmmm….. It’s so tasty, too!

Tastes just like candy!

So why don’t you join all the thousands of happy peppy people and get a great big bottle of Vitameatavegamin tomorrow!

That’s Vita-meata-vegamin! (Wink)”

The funny part is that we had to make an audition on the same script in front of other students, and they had to evaluate which student from the integrated skill class should have the part. Imagine having to say “Vitameatavegamin” for many times, especially if your English is not perfect, it will be so funny.

By the way I won out the part!!

Now the class is ended it was only a three weeks class but I’m planning to buy I Love Lucy the complete series on DVD and take it home with me on summer so I can show it to my family.

Now, which episode of I Love Lucy you liked?

Knowing The World’s Fair

“In New York’s World Fair( 1939) , the American public was introduced to the first U.S. television broadcast as President Franklin D. Roosevelt delivered a speech to welcome thousands of attendees.”

In my English class we were assigned to read about the Devil in the White City. It is a novel written by Erik Larson. The novel discusses the Chicago world Fair exhibition in 1893. In fact before reading the book, I never knew about the world fair. So I had to do some research about it, and I find out that in 2020 the World Fair is going to happen in Dubai, United Arab of Emirates and in June of this year the world fair is going to be held in Astana, Kazakhstan Interesting.

So what is the World Fair?

The world fair is a huge exhibition that show achievements of nations in one place. It is a commercial exhibition that makes people explore the world new inventions outside of their own cultures. Did you know that the dishwasher and Gum were first introduced in Chicago world fair in 1893?

The theme of this year world fair is going to be about “Future of Energy’ we have covered this topic in my English class.  This year theme is going to provide innovation, some energy solutions, and how we can apply it into our social, economic and environmental life. Speaking about energy, Rita my class partner and I, were assigned to create our own sustainable city. We named the City “Nota” first two litters of my name and last two letters of Rita’s name. we had to search for sustainable energy inventions that we can add in Nota. We found many, some of it has not been published yet who knows maybe it will be introduced in this year expo.

There are so many inventions and technologies that made their first public appearance in the world’s Fair such as, the telephone, electric outlet, x-ray machine, touchscreen, fax machines, television, and escalator.

Speaking about new technology, we went on a tour at the Mackay building in University of Nevada Reno to know about the 3D printer and the laser cutter. With the 3D printer I Saw a YouTube video showing that we can build a house using the 3D printer. Also we had the opportunity to try the google glass.

Not just technology that was introduced in the world fair, also new food such as, popcorn, ice cream cone, Heinz Ketchup, mustard, Dr. Pepper, cotton candy, and hot dog.

Moreover, in the world’s fair Walt Disney tested his latest creation. It was “a little boat ride filled with animatronic dolls singing in various languages.” You all know what song I’m talking about.  I remember this song of that game “it’s a small world after all…” because the infernal tune got stuck into my head forever.

I’m glad that I got to know about the World’s Fair, and I’m excited to attend the next World Fair expo. I wonder what new inventions the next world’s Fair will introduce?

Have any of you actually been to a world’s fair? Or planning to go?

Arabic Kohl

Today I opened my diary book and I found out that i have wrote  recipes on how to make Arabic kohl. I wrote this recipes when I was 14 years old. I took it from my granny who used to love covering her eyes with lots of Arabic kohl. In fact I’ve never seen my grandmother without kohl in her eyes. she was always advising us to put it. I used to put it with her but when the modern kohl pencil came out in market and me growing up I stopped using it. I decided to share this recipes because many people think it is the same as the kohl pencil that we usually use, also someone might likes to use it for their eyes, specially people who likes organic beauty products, and instead of buying it  from beauty stores it is easier and cheaper to make it at home.

Arabic kohl ( Al’iithmad) is a handmade eye kohl. The materials of Al’iithmad comes from the natural stone of octagon or antimony. Usually found in Levant, Morocco, and the best kind of this stone exist in Hejaz and Isfahan. octagon is a quasi-metal that is quick crisp turned. All women around the world and especially the Arabic women were  and still using it from a very long time. Poets in the Arabic world love to write and sing poetry about the eyes that have AI’iithmad in it. As a  tradition and to protect the eyes from germs and microbes Arabic women tend to put Aliithmad on new born’s eyes right a way after they born and it is totally save but it has to be done only once. Also, in the Islamic world it is desirable to appliqués the eyes with Aliithmad kohl for both men and women.

Benefits of the Arabic kohl (Al’iithmad):                            كيف_أعرف_كحل_الأثمد_الأصلي

One of the famous Arabic old true story was about Blue Eyed of Yamamah (Zurqa’ Alyamamah). Zurqa’ Alyamamah was a Najdi woman from the city of Alyamamah, which is today Najd area in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. It said that she has a very strong sight. She could see a person is coming to Alyamamah city from the walk distance of three days (more than 100 miles). The story tells that there was a war happening between Alyamamah tribe and another tribe. The other tribe was always loosing the war against Alyamamah tribe because Zurqa’ Alyamaamah used to see them coming and warn her  people. One day Zurqa’ Alyamamah saw the enemy hiding by using trees branches carrying it in front of them as way to disguise. she warned her people that she saw walking trees getting closer to Alyamamah but, they did not believe her. so when the enemy arrived to the city, they killed all the people of Alyamamah and destroyed the city. Also, they ripped off Zurqa’ Alyamamah’s eyes and found out that her eyes were filled with octagon (Al’iithmad). they said that she used to mash it up and put it in her eyes everyday. Since that event Zurqa’ Alyamamah was an example of vision quality and acuity in the Arabic world.
